2012 Alberta Athletes and Team of the Year Named

Coaches, coach developers, officials and volunteers
also recognized for contributions to sport

Alberta athletes that are being recognized as the 2012 Athlete of the Year can be found on snow and ice, on the court or in the water in their chosen sport. These young men and women encompass a variety of sports that span from bobsleigh, ski cross, swimming, racquetball and curling.

The Alberta Athlete of the Year program was created in 2002 by the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation to recognize the achievements of the province's amateur athletes. The Alberta Team of the Year has been awarded since 2004.

The 2012 Alberta Athletes of the Year are:

2012 Open Female Athlete of the Year
Kaillie Humphries (Bobsleigh) - Calgary

2012 Open Male Athlete of the Year
Brady Leman (Ski Cross) - Calgary

2012 Junior Female Athlete of the Year
Amber Thomas (Paralympic Swimming) - Drayton Valley

2012 Junior Male Athlete of the Year
Coby Iwaasa (Racquetball) - Lethbridge

2012 Junior Team of the Year: Brendan Bottcher Rink (Curling)

Coach Developer Awards
The Coach Developer Recognition Awards are designed to recognize and honour learning facilitators/evaluators for their successful and outstanding achievements in developing Alberta's coaches.

The Coaching Recognition Award is designed to recognize and honour coaches for their successful and outstanding achievements in developing Alberta's amateur athletes.

Jennifer Tregale (Synchronized Swimming) - Calgary

Officiating Recognition Awards
The Officiating Recognition Award is designed to recognize and honour officials for their successful and outstanding achievements in officiating sports that involve Alberta's amateur athletes.

Sport Volunteer Recognition Awards
The Sport Volunteer Recognition Award is designed to recognize and honour the significant contribution of individuals who devote their volunteer time and effort to the development of sport in the Province of Alberta.

Diane Gunn (Rhythmic Gymnastics) - Edmonton
Rick Hill (Sprint Canoe) - St. Albert
