New Recreation Trail System

The governments of Canada and Alberta are working together to build a new recreation trail system at Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park to provide increased enjoyment for outdoor enthusiasts and provide a boost to the local economy.

"The new trails will increase accessibility within the park, and allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy recreation and physical activities to help them lead healthier, more active lives, 'said Tourism, Parks and Recreation Minister Cindy Ady.

The trail project, announced by Ady and Wild Rose Member of Parliament Blake Richards, will be built in stages over the next three years. The 30 km trail system will be accessible for hiking, walking, running, cycling, mountain biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

"Albertans and visitors will explore the beauty of nature in this wonderful area on these trails," said Janis Tarchuk, MLA Banff-Cochrane.

The province is investing $210,000 in the new recreation trail system. The federal government, through Infrastructure Canada, the National Trails Coalition and the International Mountain Bicycling Association, will invest $77,497 in the Canmore project as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.

"Canada's government is pleased to be a partner in these improvements to the trails at the Canmore Nordic Centre. In fact, this partnership is just one of five such trail projects in communities across Wild Rose that our government is helping to fund," said Richards. "Improvements to rural and urban recreational paths and trails across Wild Rose will create jobs and boost our local economies. Our government is getting shovels in the ground immediately to enhance hiking and riding opportunities for our area's many outdoors enthusiasts."
