Sport Development Centre - Calgary Region
Emerging athletes in the Calgary region are now able to access important support services closer to home, thanks
to a partnership of Mount Royal University and the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation.
In front of an enthusiastic audience at Mount Royal University, Minister Ady announced the creation of the Alberta
Sport Development Centre - Calgary Region, which joins a provincial network of centres that includes Grande Prairie,
Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Capital Region, and Lethbridge.
"The addition of Calgary region to the Alberta Sport Development Centre Network will provide the support and services
our athletes need to achieve athletic excellence close to home," said Cindy Ady, Minister of Tourism, Parks and
Recreation. "All of the regional centres reduce the need to travel, which is really going to benefit our emerging
athletes."
The Alberta Sport Development Centre - Calgary Region will operate within Mount Royal University, providing a range
of athlete services such as nutritional counseling, physiotherapy, psychological preparation and access to advanced
coaching.
The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation will provide $110,000 to operate the centre in 2009-10.
Mount Royal University will also provide operational support.
"Our newest centre in the Calgary Region further demonstrates the Foundation's commitment to Alberta's emerging young
athletes and coaches," said Bill Persley, Chair, Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation. "We are all
working together to ensure Alberta's athletes have the resources to achieve their potential."
