Beaver Creek Trail Hike

  • Length -  4.1 km (2.6 miles) one wayQuick Fact
  • Trailhead: - Beaver Creek Campground, Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: This trail winds through a poplar and spruce woodland following a beaver dam abundant creek. The lodgepole pine forest becomes more dominant with the increase in elevation.  This trail is bumpy with numerous wet areas and is not recommended for mountain biking.
  • Destination: - Nichols Springs Parking Lot.

Firerock Trail HikeBike

  • Length - 1.6 km (1 mile) one wayTrail Use
  • Trailhead: - West central day use, Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: This moderate trail contains an initial steep section leading past a glacial erratic and into the poplar and spruce forest. Appropriate for both hiking and mountain biking.
  • Destination: - C and D loops of Firerock campground.

Highline Trail Ski

  • Length -  1.3 km (0.8 miles) one wayX-Country Skier
  • Trailhead: -Junction of Rodeo Loop trail and Spruce Coulee trail, East of Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: This groomed trail offers some exciting changes in terrain through a variety of forest settings.  Return trip is made via  Spruce Coulee trail.
  • Destination: - Spruce Coulee trail.

Horseshoe Canyon Trail HikeBike

  • Length - 4 km (2.5 miles) one way
  • Trailhead: - Base of Old Baldy, Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: This 200 metres (600 feet) gradual climb follows the trail through stands of aspen, spruce and lodgepole pine. Good mountain biking. 
  • Destination: - This somewhat strenuous hike will be rewarding when you reach the spectacular view at the Horseshoe Canyon Lookout Point.

Lakeside Trail Hike

  • Length -  2 km (1.3 miles) return
  • Trailhead: - Spruce Coulee Reservoir (near the boat ramp).
  • Description: This trail meanders along the lakes west shoreline and back to the campground via the Spruce Coulee Trail.  Not recommended for mountain biking.
  • Destination: - Spruce Coulee Campground.

Mitchell Trail Hike

  • Length -  2.8 km (1.8 miles) one way
  • Trailhead: - Elkwater Campground, Elkwater lake area.
  • Description: This trail climbs steadily through mixed wood and lodgepole pine forest and ends on the plateau. Not recommended for mountain biking.
  • Destination: - Murray Hill Road.

Rodeo Loop Trail HikeSki

  • Length -  2.2 km (1.4 miles) one way
  • Trailhead: - Off of highway 41 just south of the rodeo grounds, East of Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: Enjoy a tour through spruce and poplar woodlands with some challenging hills along way. Expert skiers.
  • Destination: - Spruce Coulee trail.

  • Length - 2.4 km (1.5 miles) one way
  • Trailhead: - East End Day Use or Firerock Day Use Areas, Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: Asphalt pathway follows the south shoreline of Elkwater Lake, with boardwalks over marshy sections.  This trail is designated as part of the Trans Canada Trail system.  It is accessible by wheelchair stroller, and bicycle.
  • Destination: - East End Day Use of Firerock Day Use Areas.

  • Length - 1 km (0.6 miles) return
  • Trailhead: - East end day use, Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: Asphalt and Boardwalk route which offers an easy stroll through forest and marsh. This trail is designated as part of the Trans Canada Trail system.  Accessible by wheelchair, stroller and bicycle.
  • Destination: - Return loop to East End Day Use.

Spring Creek Trails Ski

  • Length -  10.2 km (6.4 miles) of return loops 
  • Trailhead: -Located on Murray Hill road, one km (0.6 miles) west of highway 41, approximately 7.0 km (4.4 miles) south of Elkwater Lake. 
  • Description: Excellent variety of trails for the novice skier.  Warm up shelter is available at Willow Creek campground.
  • Destination: - Trailhead.

  • Length -  8.4 km (5.2 miles) one waySpruce Coulee Trail
  • Trailhead: - Off of highway 41 just south of the rodeo grounds, East of Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: This trail follows an abandoned road, passes a number of beaver ponds, and meanders through woodland and open fields. This trail is designated as part of the Trans Canada Trail System.   Excellent for experienced mountain bikers. Expert Skiers.
  • Destination: - Spruce Coulee Campground

Streamside Trail Hike

  • Length -  2.8 km (1.8 miles) one way
  • Trailhead: - Spruce Coulee Campground (by the parking lot).
  • Description: Streamside trail follows a stream through a spruce forest and climbs to the plateau joining  the Trans Canada Trail. Not recommended for mountain biking.
  • Destination: - Spruce Coulee Campground.

  • Trailhead: - Adjacent to the park administration office, Elkwater Lake area.
  • Description: -  A spectacular view of waterfowl habitat. This trail is designated as part of the Trans Canada Trail system.  Appropriate for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing.
  • Destination: - Spruce Coulee trailhead.

  • Length -  8.2 km (5.1 miles) one way
  • Trailhead: - Reesor Lake Campground parking lot.
  • Description: This trail provides a moderately strenuous climb for both hiker and mountain biker, but the view of the surrounding countryside is well worth the effort.
  • Destination: - Spruce Coulee Campground

  • The Trans Canada Trail system through Cypress Hills, Alberta spans 29 km from the Saskatewan/Alberta border to the west end of Elkwater Lake. It is comprised of the Battle Creek Road as well as the following trails; Spruce Coulee, Sunset, Soggy Bottom, Shoreline and the section officially called the Trans Canada Trail.
