Living With Coyotes

Animals do not recognize property lines. If you have problems with wildlife entering your yard unwanted, there may be something that is attracting them. Use the following checklist to identify problems.

Keep garbage in cans. Odours escape from plastic bags, attracting some animals that have no problem tearing the bag open to obtain an easy meal.
Clean your barbecue each time it is used. Though you may not detect any odour, many animals have a far superior sense of smell compared to people.
Keep bowls of pet food inside your home or garage. Wildlife do not understand that bowl of food is not set out for them.
Look behind your fence and remove any objects that animals could climb onto to gain access to your yard.
Do your composting within a plastic bin designed for that purpose or use red wiggler worms in your basement or garage.
Check the plant species in your yard. Perhaps you have set out the perfect buffet for deer! Alternatives, such as daffodils instead of tulips, may solve the problem. A listing of plants and trees less appealing to wildlife is available from the main park office (297-5293).
